Causes The most common cause is osteoarthritis between the dens (a bony projection of the axis) and the front of the atlas . WebObjective: Pannus formation in the atlanto-axial joint is a well-recognized complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Occasionally, atlanto-axial pannus is reported when patients without a history of RA undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine. We sought to further characterize these patients.

WebConclusions: An anterior atlantodens interval measuring greater than 2 mm is an unreliable methodology to screen trauma patientsfortransversealtantalligamentinjuriesandatlanto-axialinstability.Moreover,C1lateralmassoffset,lateralatlantodens asymmetry, and atlanto-axial rotation were all poor predictors of transverse atlantal ligament tears. WebJefferson fractures typically occur as a result of axial loading of the head. They can be treated conservatively provided the transverse atlantal ligament is intact, and as such careful examination of the atlantodens interval and presence of an avulsion fracture is critical. This injury is a Gehweiler type 3b injury, subtype 2.
